Hackers switched to hidden mining.

Analysis of the activities of hackers by specialists from IBM X-Force showed that in 2018, hackers gave more preference to hidden mining. The growing popularity of this type of cyber threat was 450% from the beginning to the end of 2018.

At the same time, a more popular type of threat - extortionists viruses - on the contrary, lost in popularity and began to be used by hackers almost 2 times less often. The same conclusion was reached by experts from Skybox Security, noting that hidden mining provides a more stable and more substantial profit. One-time “payouts” have become less and less interesting for hackers.

Security experts also noted that from the point of view of detecting threats, everything has become much more complicated. Using fileless attack complicates the detection of the miner and thus increases the profits of hackers.
