Why does the reuse of Bitcoin addresses threaten cryptocurrency privacy?

Bitcoin is considered the “gold standard” of a cryptographic market. However, the Satoshi Nakamoto project is no longer the means of payment with the highest level of anonymity. The appearance of the Lightning Network should fix this problem, but the technology is still far from mass adoption worldwide.

Now, about 54 percent of all transactions in BTC have problems with privacy. According to experts, the lack of cryptocurrency is rooted in the tendency to re-use Bitcoin addresses.

The dynamics of using the same wallets in the cryptocurrency network was calculated by analysts of the portal 0xt.me. Thanks to the study, they were able to establish the number of addresses that came under the control of new owners after some time.

According to the study, the peak of this trend came in February 2013 - it was then that 77.63 percent of addresses were reused in the Bitcoin network. After almost five years, their share fell to 41.34 percent. Also worth mentioning is July 2015. Then there was a sudden increase in magnitude.

This month, repeated addresses make up 53.57 percent of the total number of wallets on the cryptocurrency network. Note that the tendency to reuse greatly weakens the privacy of the Bitcoin ecosystem as a whole.

It turns out that this problem is much more serious than the notorious market manipulations. In fact, the whales practically bear no threat to the cryptoindustry, which means holders of digital assets should pay attention to more real difficulties.
