At the last meeting of the developers of Ethereum Core, one of the hottest topics for discussion was the integration of the new mining algorithm ProgPoW. Recall, the initiative from the team IfDefElse should minimize the impact of ASIC mining on the Ethereum ecosystem. At previous programmer conferences, ways of conducting the ProgPoW audit by a third party were discussed.
Community manager Hudson Jameson began the meeting with a small retreat on ProgPoW auditing. The algorithm check consists of two parts - benchmarking and efficiency test.
Ethereum Cat Herders [Independent Crypto Enthusiasts Association] is ready to consider both aspects of the audit. Next week we are going to sort out all the subtleties in detail and resolve the issue of financing.
According to Jameson, so far there has been no progress in the audit. He also said that thanks to the testing of the algorithm, programmers will be able to understand with a concrete example what particular limitations ProgPoW imposes on ASIC mining, and whether it will be effective at all.
The analysis of the proposed architecture of ASIC miners and the problems of their production will be carried out. We also need to work on an economic analysis of the potential impact that ProgPoW will have on the Ethereum ecosystem.
Unfortunately, to achieve everything at once is impossible because of the limitations in financing.
We spoke with Whiteblock, they have so far taken a waiting position, because they have not yet allocated money for the audit. That's what can happen - we are unlikely to conduct ProgPoW benchmarking, as this is not the most important part of the audit. Most likely, the team will finance only the second part of the audit.
The integration of ProgPoW is perhaps the most desirable event for Ethereum holders. And we are among them - the 2Miners pool also supports the new algorithm.
