The Japanese multinational conglomerate Sony and IT equipment maintenance company Fujitsu created an encrypted database for vocational education documents, The Asahi Shimbun reported February 26.
More about the purpose of cooperation.
The database, which reportedly uses blockchain technology, is necessary to prevent falsification of documents on language skills that some foreigners allegedly use to obtain resident status for training in Japan.
Foreigners must submit a certificate of proficiency in Japanese at the Immigration Bureau in order to obtain resident status to study in Japan. These certificates may be issued by Japanese educational institutions abroad. Japanese language schools in the country will provide certificates on behalf of foreign institutions.
Illegal copies of language certificates have been reported in several countries. Asahi Shimbun argues that students without proper language qualifications may face difficulties in their daily lives in Japan.
The two firms created a platform by combining Fujitsu’s online learning system with a blockchain developed by Sony’s Sony Global Education Inc. subsidiary. When using the platform, Japanese schools can compare certificates with data registered on the blockchain to verify the authenticity of the documents.
Platform testing.
Sony and Fujitsu are said to be testing the platform in March and then working with it in April. The test will be held at the Human Academy Co., which operates Japanese-language schools in the cities of Osaka, Saga and Tokyo.
Other universities and educational institutions around the world use blockchain technology to combat fake diplomas. Last week, the Maltese government announced that all educational certificates in the country, including in public, private and parochial schools, will be stored on the blockchain.
